Unpacking Season 3- School Choice

Season 3 of my podcast kicks off with school choice. Why do some parent choose to homeschool? Why would you send your child to a public school, a charter school or private school? These are questions begging for answers!

Traditional public schools have been the dominant institution for educating children, however in recent years, school choice has become a popular option for families. School choice is the term used to describe the many ways students access their K-12 education that allows families to choose the educational opportunity best aligned with their family values. These options could include homeschooling, charter schools, public schools and private schools that can be religious or nonsectarian. School choice can be empowering for families to make decisions about their children’s educational trajectory in the public K-12 school, however, research indicates there continues to be an impact on equity and diversity. There are studies that question if school choice promotes or hinders diversity by race, socioeconomical status and abilities. Research implies that school choice can impact the racial diversity of a school and community and can lead to segregation in schools.
